Sai Service in Dehradun
What does the program mean?
In accordance with Sai Baba's dictum "Gram Seva is Ram Seva", an idea cropped up in some devotees' minds about moving in this direction. A couple of them decided to open a Sai Service Center in village Dhoolkot, about 20 km west of Dehradun in the hill state Uttarakhand in India. Initially it took off with Bal Vikas classes for children with the aim of inculcating amongst them human values through the medium of story telling, devotional singing, group activities and value oriented games. Later on we started having these classes in the village primary and middle schools which were attended enthusiastically by boys and girls. Off and on, we distributed stationery items to school kids and woolen sweaters to them before the onset on winter. The schools were also provided with a water tank to store drinking water and better quality of black boards. By the grace of Baba, we have been conducting medical, dental and eye camps at irregular intervals in the primary school building as well as Sai Center building for the benefit of the rural folks in Dhoolkot and its vicinity. The Dehradun chapter of Sathya Sai Seva organization assisted by some doctors fired by spirit of selfless service to humanity has been extending all possible help in this regards. With the financial assistance from one of the devotees serving with the WHO, we were able to present a cycle driven platform to a needy person to help him in eking out a living for himself and family members. The same devotee has once again financially assisted us to meet expenses of a mega medical camp which we intend to do after the auspicious occasion of Swami’s birthday on November 23, 2009. The devotees have also done their bit in the tribal belt of Chakrata Himalayan mountain range about 100 km away from Dehradun as well as some villages at Mussoori foothills where medical camps, balvikas classes and group devotional singing is organized. The villagers may not have gained from the above efforts materially however, it has awakened them spiritually. No doubt, the simple country people had a religious bent of mind but were limited to rituals and temple visits. The spirit of doing some for the fellow travelers in this arduous journey of life seems to be taking root and with Swami’s grace, it should shape into a full fledged fruit bearing and shade giving tree in the coming years.
